Most Anticipated Records – 2016

With January almost over, we are fully into 2016 now, which means some of the biggest and some of my most anticipated albums will be dropping soon. Here’s a select few full-length LP’s that I’m looking forward to most (in no particular order).

KANYE WEST – WAVES

Name change aside, Waves will see Kanye working in unison with legendary beatmaker Madlib, pop queen Sia and the MC some (me) are calling the best in the world right now –Kendrick Lamar-, to name a few. The G.O.O.D Friday series has already given us a few full tracks off of the LP, but Kanye is expected to keep the rest of the project under wraps until its February 11th release date.

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE – PAINTING WITH

I’m a simple man- anything Animal Collective puts out is bound to please me, by now. With the only single so far, FloriDaDa, released late last year, one can’t expect much more content from the record to be released until Painting With drops on February 19th.

GORILLAZ – ???

I’ll hand you over to Damon Albarn for this entry – “I’m in the very early days on a new Gorillaz record. So far, it’s really fast, and it’s got quite a lot of energy. I’ve been stuck on piano, somewhere off Broadway, for years now. I want to go somewhere completely opposite of that.” No title or release date for the new project yet, but I can’t wait to see where Damon takes 2D and the gang on this follow up to 2010’s Plastic Beach.

DEATH GRIPS – BOTTOMLESS PIT

The new Death Grips album was announced via YouTube clip of late actor Karen Black reading through a script written by DG drummer Zach Hill. While I wasn’t so much a fan of their double LP The Powers That B, Death Grips continue to shock and impress me with their genuinely unique brand of experimental hip-hop and industrial metal. No release date or singles yet, but one can expect a fake break-up and lots of delay on the release of Bottomless Pit.

RUN THE JEWELS – RUN THE JEWELS 3

RTJ2 still remains one of the most aggressive, hard-hitting and lyrically advanced hip-hop records of the decade. Killer Mike and El-P can do no wrong at this point. No release date or singles off of their 3rd full-length album, but whatever they release, I’m down for it. In the words of Zach De La Rocha, let’s hope that RTJ “Run them jewels fast”.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

Some records that are on my radar, but maybe not pre-order material for me.

DRAKE – VIEWS FROM THE SIX

KENDRICK/ J.COLE – COLLAB (If it physically exists)

WEEZER – THE WHITE ALBUM

LCD SOUNDSYSTEM – ??? (JAMES MURPHY IS A SELL-OUT)

FRANK OCEAN – Please, Frank. Please.

PRIMAL SCREAM – CHAOSMOSIS

Thanks for reading, which albums are on your radar for 2016?
